Hurricane Melissa Claims Twenty Lives in Haiti

(MENAFN) At least 20 people have lost their lives in Haiti as Hurricane Melissa tore through the nation, local media reported Wednesday.

According to media, large sections of the southwestern coastal town of Petit-Goave were almost completely destroyed, with collapsed homes and widespread debris leaving the area in ruin, according to Mayor Jean Bertrand Subreme.

Video footage from the scene revealed severe destruction, with local sources noting that the remains of victims were still trapped beneath the rubble.

Melissa, described as one of the most powerful hurricanes to strike the Caribbean in recent years, has unleashed heavy rainfall and flooding across multiple parts of Haiti and Cuba.
